Job Description:
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Field Laboratory Assistant will support TB screening activities by collecting tongue swab specimens from all participants and sputum samples from individuals with TB symptoms. Working under the supervision of the Laboratory Technician and Study Coordinator, the assistant will ensure proper sample collection, handling, and documentation in line with the study protocol and biosafety standards.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collect tongue swab specimens from all participants screened during field activities (approximately 100 persons/day).
- Collect sputum samples from individuals identified as presumptive TB cases, following proper technique and infection control measures.
- Label and record all specimens accurately and ensure safe transfer to the on-site laboratory technician.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe sample collection area.
- Follow the study protocol, biosafety guidelines, and infection prevention procedures at all times.
- Work closely with the Laboratory Technician and assist with specimen registration and preparation as needed.
- Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and collection supplies.
- Maintain respectful interaction with community members and uphold participant confidentiality.
- Report any incidents, errors, or challenges promptly to the Laboratory Technician or Study Coordinator.
- Support other field and lab-related tasks as assigned.
EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum: Intermediate (FSc/FA) or equivalent.
- Preferably: Certificate or short course in phlebotomy, specimen collection, or medical laboratory practices.
- At least 6 months to 1 year of experience in clinical or community-based specimen collection.
- Experience working in TB programs or research studies will be an added advantage.
REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Ability to collect tongue swab and sputum samples safely and appropriately following standard protocols.
- Basic knowledge of biosafety, specimen labeling, and chain of custody.
- Familiarity with use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and infection control measures.
Teamwork & Communication
- Able to work closely and collaboratively with the Laboratory Technician and other team member.
- Good interpersonal skills to interact respectfully with community members and participants.
- Basic understanding of documentation and ability to follow instructions accurately.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical & Operational Requirements
- Ability to handle large volume screening (up to 100 individuals/day) efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable working in outreach/field conditions as part of a mobile screening team.
- Willingness to work in shifts or extended hours as needed during screening campaigns.
- Willingness to participate in training and adhere strictly to study protocol and ethical guidelines.
- Physically fit, punctual, and committed to maintaining high standards of service delivery.
